At the time, it was the largest export deal in\nAustralia’s history, and gave the commercial certainty needed to develop the\nPilbara.\n\nSix decades on, the Pilbara has become one of the world’s premier mining\nregions and the engine room of the national economy.\n\nThis growth would not have been possible without support from Traditional\nOwners, whose connection to Country stretches back tens of thousands of years,\nand the hard work and ingenuity of generations of employees. The milestone is\nalso underpinned by partnership, with communities, governments, joint venture\npartners, customers and suppliers helping shape Rio Tinto’s iron ore\nbusiness.\n\nMore than 8 billion tonnes of iron ore from Rio Tinto’s Pilbara operations\nhave been shipped to customers globally, helping create the steel that has\nshaped the modern world. From the construction of buildings and homes to\ntransport and energy infrastructure.\n\nRio Tinto is now one of the largest private sector employers in Western\nAustralia, with operations connected to six residential towns in the Pilbara\nand, through its regional fly-in fly-out program, five other regional towns,\nfrom the Kimberley to the Mid-West, South-West and Great Southern. That\nfootprint extends to Perth, home to the company’s remote operations centre\nand headquarters of its global iron ore business.\n\nAs Rio Tinto’s iron ore business has grown, so has its contribution to\nWestern Australia.\n\nIn the last five years, Rio Tinto has invested about half a billion dollars in\ncommunity initiatives across the state, building on decades of investment in\nregional communities.\n\nIn 2025, the company spent a record A$12 billion with Western Australian\nbusinesses, with its spend on local supply chains doubling over the past four\nyears.\n\nRio Tinto Iron Ore Chief Executive Matthew Holcz said: “Our story in Western\nAustralia began in the Pilbara, which remains the heart of our iron ore\nbusiness.\n\n“As we mark 60 years in Western Australia, we reflect on the people who came\nbefore us - whose hard work laid the foundations for the business we have\ntoday and for the future we are building.\n\n“We could never have built this business alone. We thank the generations of\nemployees, Traditional Owners, communities, governments, joint venture\npartners, customers and suppliers who have built it with us.\n\n“While we reflect the past, we also turn to the future. We plan to be in\nWestern Australia for decades to come, helping create further opportunities\nfor future generations of Western Australians.”\n\nTo mark the milestone anniversary, a collection of photographs from the late\nRichard Woldendorp will be gifted to the State Library of Western Australia,\nadding to the significant collection of Woldendorp photographs already held by\nthe library.\n\nDonated by Richard’s wife, Lyn Woldendorp, and digitised by Rio Tinto, the\ncollection preserves the work of the renowned photographer, who was\ncommissioned by Hamersley Iron in the 1960s to document the construction of\nthe Mount Tom Price mine and the early development of the Pilbara.\n\nIn partnership with the Perth Wildcats, Rio Tinto will also celebrate its\n60(th) anniversary with Pilbara communities and its employees, in a historic\npre-season basketball game, when the Perth Wildcats take on the Cairns Taipans\nin Karratha today (22 August). It will be the first official NBL game to be\nplayed in the Pilbara, and alongside the game, Wildcats players and coaches\nwill connect with the local community through clinics for close to 500 junior\nbasketballers and coaching development sessions.\n\nNotes:\n\nA timeline of Rio Tinto’s history in Western Australia is available here\n(https://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.riotinto.com%2Fen%2Foperations%2Fanz%2Frio-tinto-into%2Four-contribution-to-western-australia&esheet=54592968&newsitemid=20260821913616&lan=en-US&anchor=here&index=1&md5=01797504a3ddbdc15f20a48029b77eb6)\n.\n\nRio Tinto’s 60(th) Anniversary video is available here\n(https://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DMIAQF-JlwOc&esheet=54592968&newsitemid=20260821913616&lan=en-US&anchor=here&index=2&md5=e5f9cd8278876812c4a375343c3652b5)\n.\n\nHistoric video and photographs are available for media use.
