Announces First Quarter 2026 Financial Results And Declares Quarterly Dividend","author":"Globe Newswire","published_at":"2026-04-23T12:30:03.200Z","article_body":"WEST DES MOINES, Iowa, April 23, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- West Bancorporation,\nInc. (Nasdaq: WTBA; the “Company”), parent company of West Bank, today\nreported first quarter 2026 net income of $10.6 million, or $0.61 per diluted\ncommon share, compared to fourth quarter 2025 net income of $7.4 million, or\n$0.43 per diluted common share, and first quarter 2025 net income of $7.8\nmillion, or $0.46 per diluted common share. On April 22, 2026, the Company’s\nBoard of Directors declared a regular quarterly dividend of $0.25 per common\nshare. The dividend is payable on May 20, 2026, to stockholders of record on\nMay 6, 2026.\n\nDavid Nelson, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company, commented,\n“Our priorities continue to center on our relationship building strategies\nto drive improvements in profitability and build shareholder value. Our net\ninterest margin continues to expand and we saw net income increase 34.8\npercent in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the first quarter of 2025.\nOur teams are working hard at the activities that we believe will result in\nenhanced financial performance.”\n\nMr. Nelson added, “Our balance sheet remains exceptionally strong, supported\nby solid capital and liquidity levels. Credit quality remains pristine with no\nloans on nonaccrual status at March 31, 2026. Additionally, this marks our\nseventh consecutive quarter-end with no loans greater than 30 days past\ndue.”\n\nFirst Quarter 2026 Compared to Fourth Quarter 2025 Overview\n* Loans decreased $10.1 million, or 0.3 percent, in the first quarter of 2026.\nWe continue to experience notable loan payoffs as a result of secondary market\nrefinancings and asset and business sales. The change in loan mix is primarily\ndue to reclassifications resulting from completed construction projects moving\nto permanent financing and commercial loan restructurings adding real estate\ncollateral. \n\n\n* No credit loss expense on loans was recorded in either the first quarter of\n2026 or fourth quarter of 2025. \n\n\n* The allowance for credit losses to total loans was 1.02 percent as of both\nMarch 31, 2026 and December 31, 2025. There were no nonaccrual loans at March\n31, 2026 or December 31, 2025. Watch list loans decreased from $52.2 million\nas of December 31, 2025 to $41.3 million as of March 31, 2026. This decrease\nwas primarily due to the payoff of one commercial real estate loan in the\nfirst quarter of 2026 with a balance of $11.4 million. \n\n\n* Deposits decreased $133.5 million, or 3.8 percent, in the first quarter of\n2026. Brokered deposits totaled $116.5 million at March 31, 2026, compared to\n$154.6 million at December 31, 2025, a decrease of $38.1 million. Excluding\nbrokered deposits, deposits decreased $95.4 million, or 2.9 percent, during\nthe first quarter of 2026. The decline in deposits was due to normal cash flow\nfluctuations of our core depositors. As of March 31, 2026, estimated uninsured\ndeposits, which exclude deposits in a reciprocal deposit network, brokered\ndeposits and public funds protected by state programs, accounted for\napproximately 27.0 percent of total deposits. \n\n\n* Net interest margin, on a fully tax-equivalent basis (a non-GAAP measure),\nwas 2.59 percent for the first quarter of 2026, compared to 2.47 percent for\nthe fourth quarter of 2025. Net interest income for the first quarter of 2026\nwas $24.4 million, compared to $24.2 million for the fourth quarter of 2025.\nThe improvement in net interest margin was primarily due to a 14 basis point\ndecrease in the cost of deposits in the first quarter of 2026 when compared to\nthe fourth quarter of 2025.\n\n\n* The efficiency ratio (a non-GAAP measure) improved to 49.85 percent for the\nfirst quarter of 2026, compared to 50.21 percent for the fourth quarter of\n2025.\n* The tangible common equity ratio was 6.75 percent as of March 31, 2026,\ncompared to 6.42 percent as of December 31, 2025.\nFirst Quarter 2026 Compared to First Quarter 2025 Overview\n* Loans decreased $24.8 million at March 31, 2026, or 0.8 percent, compared to\nMarch 31, 2025. We continue to experience notable loan payoffs as a result of\nsecondary market refinancings and asset and business sales. The change in loan\nmix is primarily due to reclassifications resulting from completed\nconstruction projects moving to permanent financing and commercial loan\nrestructurings adding real estate collateral.\n\n\n* Deposits increased $10.5 million, or 0.3 percent, at March 31, 2026,\ncompared to March 31, 2025. Included in deposits were brokered deposits\ntotaling $116.5 million at March 31, 2026, compared to $335.5 million at March\n31, 2025. Excluding brokered deposits, deposits increased $229.5 million, or\n7.7 percent, as of March 31, 2026, compared to March 31, 2025. In the second\nquarter of 2025, a local municipal customer deposited approximately $243.0\nmillion of bond proceeds that are expected to be withdrawn over a 24 month\ntime period.\n\n\n* Net interest margin, on a fully tax-equivalent basis (a non-GAAP measure),\nwas 2.59 percent for the first quarter of 2026, compared to 2.28 percent for\nthe first quarter of 2025. Net interest income for the first quarter of 2026\nwas $24.4 million, compared to $20.9 million for the first quarter of 2025.\nThe increase in net interest margin and net interest income was primarily due\nto a decrease in interest expense on deposits and borrowed funds. The cost of\ndeposits decreased by 40 basis points in the first quarter of 2026 compared to\nthe first quarter of 2025. This was partially offset by a $79.8 million\nincrease in average deposit balances in the first quarter of 2026 compared to\nthe first quarter of 2025. Additionally, the average balance of borrowed funds\ndecreased $16.2 million in the first quarter of 2026, compared to the first\nquarter of 2025.\n\n\n* The efficiency ratio (a non-GAAP measure) was 49.85 percent for the first\nquarter of 2026, compared to 56.37 percent for the first quarter of 2025. The\nimprovement in the efficiency ratio in the first quarter of 2026 compared to\nthe first quarter of 2025 was primarily due to the increase in net interest\nincome.\n* The tangible common equity ratio was 6.75 percent as of March 31, 2026,\ncompared to 5.97 percent as of March 31, 2025. The increase in the tangible\ncommon equity ratio was due to growth in retained earnings and a decrease in\naccumulated other comprehensive loss.\nThe Company filed its report on Form 10-Q with the Securities and Exchange\nCommission today. Such non-GAAP financial measures include the Company’s presentation of\nnet interest income and net interest margin on a fully taxable equivalent\n(FTE) basis and the presentation of the efficiency ratio on an adjusted and\nFTE basis, excluding certain income and expenses. Management believes these\nnon-GAAP financial measures provide useful information to both management and\ninvestors to analyze and evaluate the Company’s financial performance. These\nmeasures are considered standard measures of comparison within the banking\nindustry. Additionally, management believes providing measures on a FTE basis\nenhances the comparability of income arising from taxable and nontaxable\nsources. Limitations associated with non-GAAP financial measures include the\nrisks that persons might disagree as to the appropriateness of items included\nin these measures and that different companies might calculate these measures\ndifferently. These non-GAAP disclosures should not be considered an\nalternative to the Company’s GAAP results. The following table reconciles\nthe non-GAAP financial measures of net interest income and net interest margin\non a fully taxable equivalent basis and efficiency ratio on an adjusted and\nFTE basis.\n\n (in thousands) For the Quarter Ended \n March 31, 2026 December 31, 2025 September 30, 2025 June 30, 2025 March 31, 2025 \n Reconciliation of net interest income and net interest margin on a FTE basis to GAAP: \n Net interest income (GAAP) $ 24,385 $ 24,206 $ 22,501 $ 21,419 $ 20,855 \n Tax-equivalent adjustment ((1)) 72 70 61 59 66 \n Net interest income on a FTE basis (non-GAAP) 24,457 24,276 22,562 21,478 20,921 \n Average interest-earning assets 3,821,463 3,893,827 3,790,154 3,799,081 3,717,441 \n Net interest margin on a FTE basis (non-GAAP) 2.59 % 2.47 % 2.36 % 2.27 % 2.28 % \n \n Reconciliation of efficiency ratio on an adjusted and FTE basis to GAAP: \n Net interest income on a FTE basis (non-GAAP) $ 24,457 $ 24,276 $ 22,562 $ 21,478 $ 20,921 \n Noninterest income 2,554 (892 ) 2,503 2,410 2,243 \n Adjustment for realized securities losses, net — 3,959 — — — \n Adjustment for losses on disposal of premises and equipment, net 2 — — — 8 \n Adjusted income 27,013 27,343 25,065 23,888 23,172 \n Noninterest expense 13,465 13,729 13,550 13,485 13,063 \n Efficiency ratio on an adjusted and FTE basis (non-GAAP) ((2)) 49.85 % 50.21 % 54.06 % 56.45 % 56.37 % \n\n(1) Computed on a tax-equivalent basis using a federal income tax rate of 21\npercent, adjusted to reflect the effect of the nondeductible interest expense\nassociated with owning tax-exempt securities and loans.
